Welcome to Cunningham Commentary! My name is Jonathan Cunningham. I’m a full-time software engineer with a heart for God and a passion for learning about His Word. I occasionally teach and often write and, more frequently, read. This blog is a passion of mine to teach and encourage others to dig deep into the Word and into authors God has used throughout history for the kingdom.
My Family
I am married to my wife, Lucy Cunningham, and have been since November of 2024. We live in Kansas City, Missouri, where we attend Crossroads Church in Grain Valley. We hope to have children soon, God willing, but for now it is just the two of us and our adorable cat, Paul.
Doctrinal Alignment
I align closest to the Second London Baptist Confession of 1689 and the New Hampshire Confession of Faith of 1833 in my beliefs. This is otherwise known as a Reformed Baptist. That does not prevent me from appreciating other viewpoints and seeking to understand what others believe and practice, so long as Christ and Christ alone is proclaimed and glorified.
Short History
I graduated from Southwest Baptist University with an undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Mathematics. From there, I got a job working as a software engineer in the financial industry. Around the same time I began college, I discovered a passion and ability for the study of God’s Word.
I have a very analytical and critical thinking mind, which leads me to read deeply and think long on topics which interest me. This is mostly used in my career as an engineer, but God has shown me that it too can be used in the study of His Word. I find great joy in not simply learning but teaching what I learn. This is best put to use in learning what God has said and what His people have said about Him and applying it to real life in the 20th century. That is the goal of this blog and my goal in life: to teach others all that He has commanded us.
AI Usage
Due to the rampant growth in usage of AI in the last few years and my personal conviction of the importance of communication and creation from real people, I wanted to put a note here about my use of AI in this blog. Here is what I do not use AI for:
Forming beliefs, thoughts, or ideas
Writing content
Biblical interpretation
Here is what I do use AI for:
Proofreading for grammar and spelling errors
Quickly finding citations, quotes, and Bible verses (which are then verified with actual copies of the media being cited)
Evaluating reading level and clarity of language used
Evaluating logical flaws
Essentially, I believe that AI is a tool that is equivalent to a secretary or research assistant. You do not generally ask either of these roles to form your beliefs or thoughts; you employ them to assist you in doing the creative and formative work in a more efficient manner. I also believe in the importance of human connection, so this blog is intentionally not written by AI and will always be written by a real human being.
